What is Family Restoration?
Family Restoration is the process of working with parents and family to safely return a child or young person to their birth parents after they have been removed from their care.
This process is also sometimes called Family Reunification. Another term used is ‘intensive family support’ which usually refers to both Family Restoration and to Prevention of coming into care services.
Children are removed from their parents’ care when there is significant concern for their safety and wellbeing. Returning home is usually the preferred choice for children who come into care because family is where the roots of their identity and culture lie. The Family Restoration service works with parents to build their capacity to provide safe care and protection and to meet the child’s needs.
The Way We Work
Key Assets has developed an evidence informed Practice Framework as the basis for our Family Restoration work.
Key Assets believes that building the capacity of the adults who care for children is the most powerful way of promoting child wellbeing and safety, and for ensuring meaningful and sustained change for children and their families. Our Practice Framework applies a mentoring and coaching approach, respectfully collaborating with parents to work on the risk and safety issues they need to address in order that their child can safely return to them. A growing body of evidence makes us confident that this approach will help achieve better outcomes for the children and families we serve.
Key Assets works very closely with the local state government department responsible for child protection in provision of Family Restoration services. All referrals to our Family Restoration Services are via the government department in the state those services are provided.
Where Does Key Assets Provide these Services?
