Foster care training is a vital part of the service we give to all our carers. When you foster with us, we help you feel empowered, confident and capable in your role as a foster carer with plenty  high-quality training. We  start the foster care training process prior to  your first placement so you know what to expect and to help you feel prepared from the start.

We recommend courses that are highly relevant to you and easy to understand. Through quality training and support, you will be better equipped with the knowledge and professional skills you need to feel comfortable and confident in caring for a child.

Pre-approval foster carer training

Once you have applied to be a foster carer with us, you can start your training. As part of your assessment, you will need to attend some preparation training.

  • Skills to Care – Get a better understanding of what it takes to be a great foster carer.
  • 19 hours of compulsory preparation training via the Department of Communities.

Post-approval training

Looking after a child or young person who has experienced trauma, abuse or neglect can be challenging. When you foster with us, you will commence carer training straight away to help equip you with the skills you need to support the  child or young person. Within the first 12 months, it is expected that all our carers undertake courses such as trauma and attachment, cultural awareness, crises intervention and first aid training, to name a few.

Ongoing foster carer training

Once you’re an approved foster carer, we will continue to support your professional development with a range of additional training options. If you need specific skills or knowledge to care for a child, we will source these training opportunities for you. Some ongoing training topics include:

  • Understanding sexualised behaviours
  • Protecting children and supporting carers
  • Safe care and allegations
  • Promoting positive behaviour
  • Impact of trauma and attachment
  • Teamwork, communication and recording
  • Cultural awareness and valuing diversity
  • Foetal alcohol syndrome
  • Key developmental assets training
  • Managing risk and crisis intervention
  • Connecting with family and contact arrangements
  • Transition training
